Do you remember books you’ve read and think, “Oh when he said that!” No? Well, I do. Maybe because I’m a writer.
I see my books as entertainment and escape reading. A story with no pressure or axe to grind. And I am always trying to say something, present something that will be something new for you, the reader.
In The House of Bliss, Book One, we have a main character who is operating outside of what most people think is acceptable. It turns out she is a person, a woman like all the rest of us. Wondering if she can put off washing her hair for another day or if she will be able to pay the bills this month.
What made me think of having this particular character? It was a sexist, denigrating joke told by Chris Rock, on some program he was MC’ing. Can I even recreate the joke? I’ll try it went something like, “Blah, blah, blah (something stupidly unnecessary), is like taking a prostitute out to dinner first.” Mean and demeaning, we don’t know anything about why someone is a prostitute other than there must be some desperation involved.
I understand it could be desperate for the next heroin hit, but it could be other desperation, like a safe place to sleep later in the night, or food for the children, we don’t know, we assume.
Okay, I’ll stop ranting. So here’s my favorite scene in The House of Bliss Book One:
“…I don’t like that you lied to me, or had others keep the truth from me. But– Babe, I’ve killed people. How can what you did be any worse than that?”
She: “Jacks, it was your job!”
He: “Els, I think what you did was your job…”
Ah, I like that scene…what are some of your favorite scenes in your favorite books?
Thanks for reading.
