The cost of cover design has skyrocketed. Three times as high as the last time I needed covers. I think I will figure out a way around it and I really don’t want to do the cover art. There are so many factors to consider. Digital placement and formatting sounds daunting without even looking into what it takes.
And before you even get to thinking cover design, there is editing. I edit the heck out of my writing, and do a dang good job of it. And all of us know. Professional editing is required. Guess what, the cost of editing has also hit the roof. It is not that I don’t think people should get paid well for good work, it’s just that it comes out of pocket until books sales are established, and you know, what if they don’t sell?
Then while you’re sweating the cost of the cover design (formatted three ways, digital for E-readers and phones, paperback, and good old hardback) and editing, you realize, that with thousands of new books hitting the shelves each week, promotion and advertising are now also required. It really isn’t negotiable. After all the time and effort, not to mention all the money already invested, you, the writer must be willing and able to promote your book so that it will stand out in a crowd.
So what’s a writer to do?
Well, write of course.
Thanks for reading!
