PLAY

Play is essential to my living into my commitment in life:

BE ALIVE UNTIL YOU ARE NOT!

I only apply my whole self if I’m having fun. To have fun I need to get outside of my self-judgement, assessed clumsiness, concern about what others think of me, and just go for it in the moment – this is what I call play. 

Often this kind of play involves hard work. Teaching myself to do something I don’t already know how to do – like playing an instrument – not easy.  Or pruning the fruit trees in my orchard – strenuous. Things that are necessary for the game I am playing at the moment. 

One doesn’t normally ascribe learning, training and development to play. But watch young children. Every living moment is learning and developing. And what they do – all day – is play.

Check it out for yourself. When do you feel the most alive? When do you feel proud? When do you want to do something again? Mostly when you have accomplished something you weren’t sure you could do. Or you finally figured out how to do something new…or something that saved you money…
